Your Lipid Profile - Blood Marker for Your Health Risks

A certain amount of fat in the diet is good and necessary to be healthy. Adults should get 20%-35% of their calories from fat. However, nutrition experts agree that most Americans should eat less fat than they currently do. Research shows that excessive intake of fat -- especially trans fat and saturated fat -- and cholesterol increases the risk of heart disease. Eating too much fat can cause excess body weight, since a gram of fat has about twice as many calories per gram as carbohydrates (see below) and proteins. (There are 9 calories per gram of fat compared with 4 calories for protein and carbohydrates.)

Fat is made up of compounds called fatty acids or lipids. Depending on their chemical structure, these fatty acids are called monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, saturated, or trans fats. Trans fats and saturated fats are the unhealthiest fats to eat. Trans fats are formed when manufacturers turn liquid oils into solid fats, such as with shortening and hard margarine. Trans fats can also be found in many foods, including crackers (even healthy-sounding ones), cereals, baked goods, snack foods, salad dressings, fried foods, and many other processed foods.

Problems with too much dietary fat can also come when 10% or more of your daily calories come from saturated fats such as those found in meats, high-fat dairy products, and butter and foods cooked or made with hydrogenated fats. And consuming trans fats in any amount is also not recommended. These practices may lead to high blood cholesterol levels and heart disease.

Cholesterol Levels

Many people are confused about the effect of dietary fats on cholesterol levels. At first glance, it seems reasonable to think that eating less cholesterol would reduce a person's cholesterol level. In fact, eating less cholesterol has less effect on blood cholesterol levels than eating less saturated fat. However, some studies have found that eating cholesterol increases the risk of heart disease even if it doesn't increase blood cholesterol levels.

Another misconception is that people can improve their cholesterol numbers by eating "good" cholesterol. In food, all cholesterol is the same. In the blood, whether cholesterol is "good" or "bad" depends on the type of lipoprotein that's carrying it. Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats do not promote the formation of artery-clogging fatty deposits the way saturated fats do. Some studies show that eating foods that contain these fats can reduce levels of LDL-cholesterol in the blood. Polyunsaturated fats, such as safflower and corn oil, tend to lower both HDL- and LDL-cholesterol. Edible oils rich in monounsaturated fats, such as olive and canola oil, however, tend to lower LDL-cholesterol without affecting HDL levels.

While people aware that they should get their cholesterol checked, Most people don't know how to interpret their blood results. There are certain terms related to your Blood Chemistry that you should understand. When your doctor does a full lipid profile, he or she is evaluating these basic numbers.

1. HDL (High-density lipoprotein or good cholesterol)--is a type of cholesterol that good or protective. If small amounts of plaque (LDL or bad cholesterol) have been laid down in your blood vessels and you have enough HDL, you'll be able to dissolve this plaque an use it as an energy source.



  • Good HDL is 40 mg/dl and above for man.


  • Good HDL is 50 mg/dl and above for a woman.



2. LDL (Low-density lipoprotein or bad cholesterol)-- is the bad type of cholesterol that collects in your blood vessels as plaque and clogs them if you have to much floating around in your blood stream or if you don't have sufficient HDL to dissolve it. According to the new cholesterol standards for both genders recently published by the Journal of the American Medical Association:



  • And LDL of less than 100 mg/dl is optimal.


  • 100-129 mg/dl is near or above optimal.


  • 130-159 mg/dl is borderline high.


  • 160-189 mg/dl is high


  • 190 mg/dl and up is very high.


LDL-cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol act differently in the body. A high level of LDL-cholesterol in the blood increases the risk of fatty deposits forming in the arteries, which in turn increases the risk of a heart attack. Thus, LDL-cholesterol has been dubbed "bad" cholesterol. On the other hand, an elevated level of HDL-cholesterol seems to have a protective effect against heart disease. For this reason, HDL-cholesterol is often called "good" cholesterol.

3. Triglycerides is another form in which fat is transported through the blood to the body tissues. Triglycerides are the fats that appear in the blood soon after your meals. Normally,they are stripped of their fatty acids when they pass through various type of tissue,especially adipose (beneath the skin) fat and skeletal muscle. Most of the body's stored fat is in the form of triglycerides. Another lipoprotein--very low- density lipoprotein, or VLDL--has the job of carrying triglycerides in the blood. Triglycerides are converted into stored energy that is gradually released and metabolized between meals according to the metabolic needs of your body. NHLBI considers a triglyceride level below 150 mg/dl to be normal. It is not clear whether high levels of triglycerides alone increase an individual's risk of heart disease. However, they may be an important clue that someone is at risk of heart disease for other reasons. Many people who have elevated triglycerides also have high LDL-cholesterol or low HDL-cholesterol. People with diabetes or kidney disease--two conditions that increase the risk of heart disease--are also prone to high triglycerides. Almost everyone loves sugars and other kinds of carbohydrates than you are require daily, your triglyceride level will elevate. When this happens,your disease risk for hyperglycemia and diabetes can increase and you will become more susceptible to coronary heart disease.



  • A normal triglyceride level is 150 or below.


  • 150-199 is borderline high.


  • 200-499 is high.


  • 500 or over is very high.



4. Your total cholesterol is calculated by adding your HDL plus your LDL plus your triglycerides divided by five.



  • A total cholesterol less than 200 mg/dl is desirable.


  • 200-239 mg/dl is borderline high.


  • 240 mg/dl or greater is considered high.

Do you ever eat more than you want because you paid for it and want your money's worth? How about when you're already comfortably stuffed, but there are a couple more bites, and you're in an expensive restaurant? Are you more likely to go ahead and eat it? Come on, admit it. It's okay. We've all been there.

If you tend to overeat in restaurants or you're a member of the clean-the-plate club, consider changing the way you think of buying and paying for food. You are paying for the first bite only. Once you've eaten that first bite, the rest is free, so if you notice you've had enough, throw the rest away, or wrap it up for later. If there's not enough to take it home, leave it. You don't think you could ever leave food on your plate? That's simply a belief. Use EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) on those old, outdated beliefs and change that faulty thinking quickly and easily (see resource box below).

Here's how I maintain my 80 pound weight loss. I prefer to buy a piece of cake (or two) from a great local bakery, like Rose's Bakery in Portland, Oregon. At Rose's a piece of cake is $5 or more, but it's worth it. If I instead brought home an entire cake from the grocery store, I'd end up with an entire leftover cake, that I'll likely enjoy over a few days time, but that means I'll have eaten four pieces of cake instead of one. I'm not doing myself any favors by saving money.

The tendency to keep overeating sets in after a few solid days of indulgence. Eating cake four days in a row will probably set my taste buds up for wanting to eat cake all the time. Keep a treat special, an occasional indulgence, not a regular habit.

It's far better to just enjoy some cake when you really want it, and be done with it. When you want a treat, have a real treat. Trying to deny a craving doesn't usually work because you still want what you want. Decide if you are willing to pay five dollars for a bite of delicious cake. If the answer is yes, then go get some. If the answer is no, then when looking at the cheaper cake, remember, that first bite. Think only of the first bite. Would you pay five dollars for one bite of that cheaper cake?

I Can't Leave Food on my Plate is a Belief

Once you get past the belief that you absolutely must eat every single bite, you'll be free to explore the notion that the first bite is the one that matters.

Take that first bite and judge it based on how it tastes, and how much you're enjoying it in that moment. Savor that first bite, chew it slowly, roll it around, or let it melt. If it were to be your only bite would you want to hurry up and swallow, or would you want to take your time to prolong the experience? When you think you are drowning you'll gasp for air, but we aren't starving. Our food supply isn't in jeopardy so there's no need to eat like it's your last meal.

Yes, good food can be expensive but acting like a human garbage can will cost far more in the long run with hospital bills and doctor visits. Eat that first bite and totally enjoy it. Then decide how many more bites you really want.

Сколько стоит доступное жилье в Украине?

Кабинет министров Украины оценивает в 12,3 млрд грн стоимость реализации национального проекта "Доступное жилье", предусматривающего строительство "президентских" кварталов, на период с 2011-го по 2015 гг.

Это программа внесена в ориентировочный перечень инвестиционно-инновационных проектов Государственной программы развития внутреннего производства Украины, утвержденной постановлением правительства №1130 от 12 сентября 2011 года.

Согласно документу, реализация этой программы позволит, в частности, создать около 3 тыс. новых рабочих мест.

Государственное предприятие "Национальный проект "Доступное жилье" выступает субъектом инвестдеятельности по данному проекту.

Как сообщалось, Нацпроект "Доступное жилье" предусматривает строительство "президентских" кварталов, состоящих из 16 девятиэтажных домов на 70 квартир каждый в 26 областных центрах. Площадь земельного участка должна быть 4-5,5 га. Ориентировочная себестоимость строительства 1 кв. м жилья составит 3,5 тыс. грн, продажная стоимость - 4 тыс. грн/кв.м.

Кроме того, в перечень проектов госпрограммы включен также Нацпроект "Чистый город", предусматривающий строительство заводов по переработке и утилизации твердых бытовых отходов в городах Украины. Стоимость реализации проекта на период с 2011-го по 2014 гг. оценивается в 4,83 млрд грн.

В программе также указывается, что окончательная стоимость проектов будет уточняться после утверждения сметно-проектной документации.

Госпрограмма развития внутреннего производства Украины объединяет 159 проектов стоимостью 349,042 млрд грн. Программа является бессрочной. Первый этап ее реализации определен до 2015 года.

Проекты "Доступное жилье" и "Чистый город" входят в перечень 10 национальных проектов, разработку которых инициировал президент Украины Виктор Янукович.

It is basically our fuel.

White bread, white rice, sugared sodas, and pastries give us carbohydrates that are digested very rapidly, whereas things like grains and fruits give us carbohydrates that can form part of a good fast weight loss diet.

One simple fact that all need understand is that there doesn't exist a fast weight loss diet that will work the way it is supposed to unless proper exercise is intertwined with it. If we are going to eat fuel, then we must use it.
